This is my mother’s apple crumble recipe.  It’s so unbelievably delicious and best served warm, straight out of the oven, with vanilla ice cream.  Enjoy!!!!

Ingredients:

Crust:

  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • ¼ cup butter, melted
  • ¼ cup sugar

Filling:

  • 6 red apples, peeled and cut into bite size pieces
  • ¼ cup butter
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • ¼ tsp ground cinnamon

Crumble:

  • 1 cup flour
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 1 cups rolled oats
  • ¾ cup cold butter, cut into ½ inch cubes

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.

  1. To create the crust, in a mixing bowl, combine all ingredients to create a dough.

  1. Grease a heat proof dish or a baking pan, preferably one with a removable bottom and press the dough evenly on the bottom.

  1. Bake the crust for 15 minutes. Once baked, remove the dish/pan from the oven and set aside.

  1. To create the filling, in a medium saucepan, melt the butter.

  1. Add all remaining filling ingredients to the saucepan and stir to combine.

  1. Continue to cook the filling ingredients until the apples have softened slightly, about 10 minutes depending on the size of the pieces.

  1. Pour the filling ingredients over the crust.

  1. To create the crumble, in a mixing bowl, combine the flour, brown sugar and rolled oats.

  1. Add the butter, rubbing it in with finger tips until the crumble comes together into moist clumps.

  1. Place the clumps on top of the filling and ensure to space it out so that the crumble will cover the apples or almost cover the apples.

  1. Bake at 375°F for about 40 minutes or until the crumble has become crisp and golden brown.  Note:  Watch the crumble closely after 30 minutes in the oven to ensure it doesn’t burn.

  1. Serve warm.
