This is one of my favourite meals. I could be at the best Italian restaurant in town and I will likely still order either spaghetti with tomato sauce or meat sauce. I just can’t get enough.
Yield: 4 to 6 servings
Ingredients:
- 450 grams spaghetti
- 450 grams lean ground beef
- 2 tbsp garlic puree
- ½ cup chopped onion
- 1 jar (640 ml) tomato sauce
- ¼ cup freshly chopped basil
- ½ cup chopped spinach (optional)
- Crushed chili peppers (optional)
- Parmesan cheese (optional)
Directions:
- In a large saucepan, bring water to a boil to cook the spaghetti according to the package’s instructions.
- Separately, in a medium saucepan over medium heat, add the lean ground beef and garlic puree. Continue to stir to ensure that the ground beef is broken up.
- Once the beef has browned, add the onion and continue to stir.
- After the onion is cooked and there is only a little liquid remaining, add the chopped spinach if using and stir.
- When the liquid has disappeared, add tomato sauce and stir. Then add the chopped basil and stir. Once the sauce bubbles, remove from heat.
- Drain the water from the spaghetti in a colander if this hasn’t been done already and return the spaghetti to the large saucepan.
- If the meat sauce is no longer hot, reheat on medium heat and once it’s bubbling, add the meat sauce to the large saucepan containing the spaghetti.
- Gently combine the spaghetti and meat sauce.
- Serve with crushed chili peppers and/or parmesan cheese.
